Social proof gap
Phones feel normal because more children already have them.
Phones are visible, familiar and socially accepted. Smartwatches are less established, so parents need a clear reason why Watch Plan is a normal, responsible and fair choice for their child.
Social pressure often operates indirectly. Parents may not say they are following other families, but what other children have shapes what feels normal, defensible and fair.
Parent voice
[A parent who gives their child a connected smartwatch] to me would be very protective and very smart. And probably have a bit more money, because there’s not a heck of a lot of nine year olds walking around with their smart watches.
Parent, Queensland, child aged 10
Key evidence
Around 1 in 2 parents (50%)
say all or most of the child’s friends or classmates have their own phone. Only around 1 in 7 (15%) say all or most have their own smartwatch.
More than 1 in 2 parents (58%) worry the child could feel left out if they do not have what friends have.
Behavioural job
Give parents social licence by making Watch Plan feel like a normal, responsible first step for families who want their child to be reachable before a smartphone.
